Shocking photographs show the horrific reality of banned cat and dog meat festival in China

These photographs show the shocking reality of the stolen pets that are being slaughtered for a ‘dog meat festival’ in China – despite the event being banned by local authorities.

The festival was banned in Yulin, central China last year – after two million campaigners passionately rallied for an end to the brutal event.

While a large amount of the animals die from shock and dehydration, those that survive are subjected to barbaric beatings, or even have their throats cut in illegal slaughterhouses and street markets.

But now, an undercover investigation has revealed that more than 10,000 animals, many of them stolen, are being transported to the city as the festival organisers prepare to flout the ban and take place on June 22.

The investigation was undertaken by Humane Society International – after the group suspected that thousands of animals were still being inhumanely killed in the city.

A cat climbed up the cage at the slaughterhouse, trying to escape.  This cat was later bought by Peter Li with HSI/China.
And despite being assured that the festival had been banned, group activist Peter Li uncovered hundreds of freshly slaughtered dogs impaled on spikes and cats being crammed into tiny wire cages.

Many were unable to stand because they had suffered broken bones and severe wounds en-route to their final destination.

Peter also discovered that slaughterhouse workers had been instructed to kill animals under the cover of night, while restaurants were instructed to remove the words ‘dog meat’ from menus, in order to cover up the festival’s continued existence.

Speaking to MailOnline, Peter said: ‘Mass dog slaughter is still going on at Yulin despite the local authorities trying to give the impression that it’s ended.

‘The Yulin government has declared the “festival” will not happen, but this is more semantics and thousands of dogs will still die for their meat whether it’s called a festival or not.

Describing the horrific conditions of the slaughterhouse, which he viewed first hand, Peter added: ‘The place was full of blood, internal organs of the dogs and cats, blow torched carcasses, and freshly slaughtered dogs hanging on hooks’ Mr Li added.

‘We saw two wire cages filled with cats waiting to be slaughtered the next day. They were suffering from long journeys, food deprivation, mental trauma, and illnesses. Some of them wore collars.’

Although widely condemned, it is legal to eat dogs in China, and no laws exist to protect the welfare of animals – although the Ministry of Agriculture requires cats and dogs to have ‘health certificates’ before they are transported for slaughter.
